A major industrial disaster occurred in Bhopal when a chemical gas spilled from a pesticide factory owned by Union Carbide. Thousands of people died due to it.

Some steps which can be taken to prevent such a disaster are:

1. Special training should be given to the industrial workers in the developing countries.

2. The public should be informed about the warning signals and taught how to react in such situations.

3. The rural areas in the developing countries should not be used for testing complex new technology.

4. Regular audits of the plants should be done by the headquarters of the company.

5. Proper safety systems should be installed.

6. Company executives should be technically trained in the businesses that use toxic materials. So that they can make up for the lack of technical knowledge among the local plant staff.

7. Appropriate buffers should be placed around the factory. This will prevent the danger of crowding.

8. Preventive maintenance tasks should be performed on a regular basis.

9. The host governments should carefully and continually inspect the hazardous factories and enforce strict sanctions for safety lapses.

10. The governments of developing countries and multinational companies should enter into agreements only after considering whether the technologies can be handled safely in the long run.
