Yes, it could have been successful. Boy, what a Bharat we would have had.

More than the weapons and the manpower, proper strategy, tactics, wholesale popular support and united political will of the various Rajas was needed for victory.

Alas, the efforts of the Sepoys was devoid of all things required for a successful revolt.

Here is a summary of the ingredients required for their victory:

Military Leadership - An Officer Corp:the Sepoys were well oiled in battle, war and field craft from the various campaigns they took part in. However experience in strategic decision making and battalion level tactics were simply missing as the men were usually officered by the British. Apart from isolated cases, the Sepoys were led by contemporary versions of JCOs today who were not adept in flowing field battles.

Strategy: Apart from costly victories from engagements with smaller EIC elements, the Sepoys were crushed each time they engaged larger columns of the Europeans in frontal attacks. The enemy’s cavalry tactics through well heeled formations were simply unbeatable because the Indians never had to face such European formations before. At least not the Purbiyas (the Madras Regiment did so battling the French in the South). The Europeans with their cavalry had greater mobility. A large element of freedom fighters were boxed into Delhi during her siege and wiped out by a thousand cuts:

The enemy’s cavalry tactics through well heeled formations were simply unbeatable because the Indians never had to face such European formations before. At least not the Purbiyas (the Madras Regiment did so battling the French in the South). The Europeans with their cavalry had greater mobility. A large element of freedom fighters were boxed into Delhi during her siege and wiped out by a thousand cuts:

Popular Support: The same way the Persians crumbled when the Iranian royalty converted to Islam, the lack of support from political support from the Rajas, feudal land owners, intelligentsia and ordinary city folks dealt a death knell to the rebellion. With all due respect, heroic efforts of people like Rani of Jhansi and Tantya Tope were wrecked from within due to this appalling apathy of the majority of the Royalty then. Naturally the denizens of their lands took to the decision by their leaders. Thank god, power to change the course of the country today has gone back to the grassroots and India today is her villages, mofussils and not her mega cities.

Unity of the Masses: The revolt took religious colours when the flag of Jihad was raised in Delhi by the Ulema there. The Hindus who suffered for millenniums under them could loathe their attempts for all they cared. Furthermore, the Sikhs suffered tremendously under the EIC occupation, enforced by Purbiyas. The people of the Punjab hated the Purbiyas more than they hated the EIC. Regional biases were another impediment.

Political Leadership and will: A wartime leader needs military credentials as well to earn mass level obedience and followership. Our great Rajas and generals like Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Raja Ranjit Singh and Barphukan had this great attribute. However sadly, the reigning Mughal had no such credentials. He already one feet in the grave and the ailing leader was given command of the freedom fighters. Naturally his clarion call fell on deaf ears as the Mughals by then were wasted and dying force.

Money: Money buys food, logistics and loyalty. Anyday. Standing armies with professional soldiers fight for many things but money keeps them afloat. Did we have the funds? I wish the freedom fighters had invested time in building a war fund before jumping into battle.

Intelligence: India was lost to various invaders and marauders for a want of intelligence. Likewise, the EIC had deeply penetrated the freedom fighters and battle plans were always known to the enemy before massive engagements. The freedom fighters could have greatly benefited from counter intelligence.

I got to write more later because I am the defaulter here as per the latest Naveen Polshetty video on 9 hours at work. I am wasting time
