Explanation:
He was a pioneer of political science and economics. A man who won battles using his brain. He helped establish the Mauryan Empire. But before he helped Chandragupta take the throne, there's a legend that says it was all part of a revenge plot. A tale of impressive planning by the great Chanakya.
There are two different versions of the story. Believe whichever one you want to, it still makes for the perfect revenge against an undeserving & corrupt king.
The winter was extremely cold and harsh that year in Magadha. While the noblemen could manage through the difficult weather, the poor (and they were many) were finding it hard to sustain. The people of Magadha had just been through a tough war and the Maurya Empire was still in its early days. But the people had faith in their new ruler – the great Emperor Chandragupta!
One frozen morning, they gathered in front of the royal palace in the Capital City of Pataliputra and shared their grief with him. They asked if the kind Emperor could arrange for woollen blankets for his underprivileged subjects. Chandragupta was moved by their predicament. He looked at his trusted mentor and Prime Minister – Acharya Vishnugupta, better known as Chanakya. The wise brahmin nodded his head. Chandragupta got the message and he smiled! He now looked at his people and announced that he would order for twenty thousand new woollen blankets and that Acharya Vishnugupta would personally supervise the distribution of the same. People of Magadha were happy. They were already feeling warm with their emperor’s love and kindness. Orders were given, and within about 60 hours, 20,000 brand new and warm woollen blankets were delivered to Acharya Vishnugupta’s house. They were to be distributed the next morning. The news spread, and everyone was happy to hear it.
Not all amongst the people of Magadha were looking forward to receiving the blanket of their share. Someone wanted all of those blankets so that he could sell them somewhere else! He was Srivardhan, the notorious thief of Magadha. He sensed a hot opportunity on a cold winter night. Chanakya’s house was not fortified. It was neither guarded. Srivardhan gathered a couple of men and two bullock carts. He wanted to keep it quiet. They reached near Chanakya’s house in the dark of the night when everyone was asleep. The thief smiled; there were no armed guards. Only an old woman sleeping in the courtyard under an old blanket. She was Chanakya’s mother. “What a fool he is! There are 20,000 brand new blankets inside and the old woman still has the old blanket,” he told his two companions. “That’s because they belong to the people of Magadha. I am only the caretaker for a night,” it was Chanakya himself replying with a warm smile. Fear and shame ran through the thief’s heart. But Chanakya let him go. He knew, he could make good use of the thief in future. Then, he went inside and sat near his sleeping mother's feet. Honesty, courage and love for his country always kept him warm and comfortable!
