The CORE of electromagnets should be made with ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic material (to increase the total magnetic field). Most cores are made with IRON because this is cheaper than nickel or cobalt, the other two ferromagnetic metals.

To make an electromagnet take an iron bar wrap through a coil wire and attached it on a cell's terminal point and then put the wire in the switch and turn on the switch. The current started passing in the iron bar after 15 to 20min , an electromagnet is ready.
