Mrs Singh was the wife of a sub-inspector of police and Ruskin Bond’s neighbor in Astley Hall.  She smoked a hookah and was a woman in her thirties. At twilight, she often regaled supernatural stories from her village near Mainpuri.

Once such tale she narrated to the author was about how she had once seen a ghost who happened to be her husband’s first wife. When the Singhs’ son Sumit was just a few months old, the ghost took him out of his cradle and rocked him in her hands for some time before putting him back. The ghost then expressed her happiness that the child was a boy. Mrs Singh would also narrate stories of churels or ghosts of immoral women to the author.

Most of Mrs Singh’s tales have been retold by Ruskin Bond in his books A Season of Ghosts and Tales Told at Twilight.
