On regular school days, the classroom was very noisy and the hustle and bustle could be heard out on the streets even. On the day Franz was late, he was surprised to see the class very quiet and subdued. He expected M. Hamel to scold him as soon as he entered, for being late, but his tutor behaved very kindly, and mildly told Franz to quickly go to his seat. It was also a surprise for Franz to see his teacher turned out in his Sunday best – a beautiful green coat, his frilled shirt and his little black silk cap, all embroidered. He usually never wore those clothes except on inspection and prize days. But, the thing that surprised Franz most was that the back benches, usually left empty, were filled with adults from the village. Everybody looked very sad. That was when M. Hamel announced that this was their very last lesson in French, which shattered little Franz.
