‘Village Song’ is a mystical, symbolic, and mythical, poem by Shrimati Sarojini Naidu. It deals with the natural fear of a village girl who had gone to fetch water from the river, Yamuna.

EXPLANATION:

The village girl in the poem ‘Village Song’ is surrounded by the fear of storm, darkness, serpents, and rain. The poet writes that the road was long and isolated and the night was going to scoff the day soon. After having filled up her water pitchers, the village girl is in a hurry to return her home.

However, she is delayed by the boatman’s song. She was so fascinated by the boatman’s song that she had forgotten to return and continued to stay so as to listen to the boatman’s song and this was why the village girl was tempted to tarry. By staying back and listening to the boatman’s song, the village girl gets late.

Then, the village girl suddenly realized that the shadows of night were falling and there were no moon rays to guide and light her, and if in the darkness a serpent bites her or an evil spirit smites her, the village girl fears she would die.
