The term ‘revolution’ itself describes the Earth’s movement around the Sun in an elliptical orbit that brings it back to any given position after 365 days. This is what we call an year.

Revolution and rotation are commonly misunderstood in relation to each other. Rotation is the term given to the Earth’s own movement or spin around its north-south axis which lasts for 24 hours or one day, as we term it.

To illuminate this better, take a top, spin it and throw it to the ground. It will move around in a gradual arc. This would be called its revolution while its own spin on the little nail jutting from its bottom would be the rotation.

Rather than being a perfect circle, the Earth moves around the Sun in an extended circular or oval pattern. This is what is known as an "elliptical" orbit. This orbital pattern was first described by Johannes Kepler, a German mathematician and astronomer, in his seminal work Astronomia nova (New Astronomy)
