Adaptation

Explanation:

  • Though adaptation is generally known as the structural, behavioral or physical changes which help animals to survive better in the changing surroundings.
  • Adaptation also helps animals to ignore insignificant stimuli by getting adjusted to it. In other words we can say that it helps the animals in dropping out of insignificant responses caused by insignificant stimuli provided by the surroundings, allowing them to focus on their primary activities.
  • For example: When we go to a fish market or nearby it, the foul smell of the fish irritates our nose and we find it extremely difficult to ignore it, but the people who work there everyday can't smell it because they have been adapted to that smell and their brain isn't producing any response because the stimuli has been provided to them for a long period of time, whereas for us the environment has changed and the stimulus is new. This is known as olfactory adaptation.
  • The same is also true for chemical factory workers but the chemicals still have an effect on their bodies in long term because adaptation doesn't necessarily mean a change in the internal basic functioning mechanism of the body of the animal.
