A small round disc called the tympanum covers the ears of both male and female frogs. On males of most frog species, the circumference of this small disc is larger than the eye of the frog. On females of most frogspecies, the disc's circumference is equal to the size of the frog's eye.

Female bullfrogs are larger in size than males are, and males' heads are more narrow. The female's throat is white, whereas the male's throat is yellow. A bullfrog's round eardrums, called tympanums, are on the outside of his body, behind his eyes.
