Answer:

India's first seaplane service will start from October 31 and it will be operated by SpiceJet. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the service and also board the first flight that will take off from the Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad Gujarat from October 31, the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Though an official confirmation is awaited, it is likely that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the service and also board the first flight that will take off from the Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad at 10:15 am and reach the Statue of Unity in Kevadia, Gujarat at 10:45 am.

It may be noted that seaplanes can land on both small water bodies and short airstrips. The service will offer access to areas that do not have landing strips and runways. The first seaplane landed in India from Male in the Maldives on Sunday.

Commenting on the development, Dr Rajiv Kumar Gupta, Additional Chief Secretary in Gujarat’s Forest and Environment Department, said, “Seaplane for Kevadia takes off from Male, Maldives. Regular seaplane service, 4 times a day will connect 2 great and visionary projects given by Hon @PMOIndia to the nation-Sabarmati River Front and the Statue of Unity. A gigantic leap in making Kevadia a truly international tourist spot.”

The seaplane flights will be operated by SpiceJet’s fully-owned subsidiary, Spice Shuttle. Initially, SpiceJet will operate two daily round-trip flights on the Ahmedabad-Kevadia route.

The one-way fare for the ride will start at Rs 1,500 under the UDAN scheme and tickets will be available on www.spiceshuttle.com from October 30 onwards. SpiceJet will be using a 15-seater Twin-Otter 300 aircraft for these flights.

SpiceJet has conducted seaplane trials in India since 2017. While under the first phase, trials of the landplane were conducted in Nagpur and Guwahati, the second phase involved the amphibious aircraft, for which trials were held at Mumbai’s Girgaum Chowpatty.

SpiceJet has secured 18 seaplane routes under the UDAN scheme, which includes Ahmedabad-Kevadia (Sabarmati River Front to Statue of Unity, Sardar Sarovar) and Agatti-Minicoy, Agatti-Kavaratti among others.

Meanwhile, regions in the North East, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Andaman, Lakshadweep and other coastal areas are a few destinations that are being evaluated for amphibious plane operations.
