Answer:
When I was about 7 or 8 years old, I stumbled upon a typed essay that had been photocopied on recycled paper. It appeared to be from the 1970s and most likely belonged to my aunt or mother.
It was a short story about a girl and her younger sister. It was written from the viewpoint of the older sister.
The older sister had resented her younger sister since her birth. I cannot remember exactly what the reason was for the resentment, but if I had to fill in the blanks, I would say it was most likely due to attention, jealousy, and sibling rivalry.
Her younger sister looked up to her older sister and would do anything to try to get her to play with her.
Being the older sister, she was one day so annoyed with her younger sister that she wanted her to leave her alone.
She told her to run outside because there was something for her in the mail. The little girl happily ran out, got hit by a car, and died.
The older sister felt awful and this is expressed in the story.
I was an only child whose biggest fear was being replaced by a sibling. I had jealousy toward a situation that didn't exist and never would.
After reading this, I was suddenly overcome with a deep sadness for that little girl. I think it was the first time I really felt empathy.
It made me think.
My selfishness and jealousy for some little human that didn't even exist could cause such a tragedy to happen. I could have been that older sister. That terrible ending could have very well been my story.
