At first, George packed the butter than he tried to pack it in a kettle. As it was quite difficult task so they decided to take it out.
Fate of Harris and George:
They put the pack of butter on the chair. Harris sat on it unintentionally and they were not able to find it when required. They went around the room looking for it and in the end found it held to Harris' trousers and coped to pack it in the teapot. This incident shows us the incapability of a few people to pack things correctly when going on a trip. But at the same time it is so amusing that we do not feel insulted.

Packing written by 'Jerome K. Jerome' humorously describes the dos and don’ts of packing. The story is based on the theme that packing must not be considered a frivolous activity, but a serious job involving deftness and concentration. The humorous account of this story by the author entertains the readers with the confusing and chaotic situations made by the author’s and his two friends’ clumsiness; the three who considered packing to be a child’s play.
EXPLANATION:
- George and Harris had taken upon themselves the task of packing the basket with stuff such as 'cups', 'bottles', 'kettle', 'pies', 'jams', 'butter', 'salt', 'jars', 'plates', 'cakes', 'stoves', 'tomatoes', etc. with quite an elan; however they ended being the worst packers and with both Harris and George being as clumsy, forgetful, casual, and ill-organised as Jerome. AT the very outset they break a cup.
- They falter several times when packing the huge pile of mixed stuff such as cups, kettle, bottles, tomatoes, pies, etc. They accumulated all the items to be packed in the most unsystematic manner. They had damaged several items by crushing, breaking, or accidentally stepping on them. Harris packed the 'strawberry jam' on 'top of a tomato' and had squashed the tomato. Therefore, they had to remove the tomato that was 'messy with a teaspoon' which was a time-consuming task.
- George accidentally 'stepped over the butter' and then he and Harris grappled to put it in the kettle however it got stuck. The butter neither went in nor could it be removed. Then Harris in some way 'managed to scrape it' and place it on the chair. But, sometime later, an 'absent-minded Harris' had sat on the chair and the butter had got stuck to his back. Both 'Harris and George' jumbled up the things to be packed and crushed softer things such as pies under heavy objects. Salt also flew all over while they were packing.
