I can't speak for actors/performing artists but I can speak to playing music live. My answer is really catered more to musicians but I think it's pretty applicable to non-musician performers.

I played in a rock band for about 8 years. We played a show pretty much every other month and had a small recording contract.

Performing live is a lot of fun. It's an amazing feeling to be up on stage and see people digging your music. My favorite parts were seeing people dancing/jumping up and down to our songs.

It's hard work though! It may look fun and easy but, even for superstars, putting on a good show takes a work.

Some things I wish I knew when we first started:

Stage Presence
Engage the audience. They are there to see you! Talk with them, tell a story behind the song, discuss your upcoming stuff. You want everyone there to pay attention to you. There is nothing more aggravating that seeing someone bored on stage.
Confidence
Goes with #1 but don't be afraid/intimidated. Grab people's attention. It sounds corny but a good "What's up (insert city name)!" will at least be better than saying, "hi... My name is John... And we're The 4 Dudes." Be confident in yourself and everyone will be drawn to it. Don't feel like you have to talk incessantly but engaging in some banter with the crowd will keep people engaged and entertained.
Rehearse
Goes without saying, but practice is crucial. You'd be shocked how many musicians can't play well live. The songs should come as second nature. You don't want to forget how to play your own songs! You should also make an effort to try to pick the songs you feel make the best impression live. Don't be afraid of covers. If they're good and get the audience listening, then can be a great way to segue to an original song.
Plug yourself / other bands and the venue.
Promote all your websites, merch, and future shows so people know where to find you and also give some karma to your the venue (mention the sound guy and bartenders) and also the other musicians on the ticket that night.
*Protio: Make friends with them and you'll always have future shows.
Have fun.
Sounds silly but it's easy to psych yourself out. You're playing live and things will not go as planned. I once had to go to the bathroom really bad one performance. It was stupid but I laughed it off when I came back on stage. It's a rock show so you should try to enjoy yourself as much as you can.
Hope le this helps and hope to see you live some day!
