Answer: the Mesopotamian Civilization flourished along with the river valley of the Tigris and Euphrates . The existence of the civilization date backs to 3500 - 600 BC .

However , it was discovered as late as the first quarter of the century . The term 'Mesopotamia' means 'the land between two rivers'.

In Mesopotamia , there were three regions -

1. Sumer , the nearest to the sea

2. Akkad in the central part

3. Assyria in the north

Sumer was the first to develop and thus , this civilization is also called the Sumerian Civilization . Some of the important cities of this region were Ur, Eridu and Lagash . The kings of Ur were powerful and ruled in the region of Sumer . At around 2500 BC , the rulers of Akkad conquered Sumer. Babylon was the most important city . At around 7500 BC , the Assyrian conquered the entire region . However , their rule lasted for less than a century . Nineveh was the most important city .

Hammurabi from 1792 to 1750 BC was the greatest of the Babylonian rulers . he conquered territories to the north and expanded his empire in the region which is now known as Iraq . Hammurabi is famous for his Code of Law . He inscribed the law of his land on a huge slab of stone . the Law Code contains 282 laws relating to economic , family , civil and criminal cases . The laws were related to every aspect of life . However , the punishment difered according to the social classes . Obviously , it was much more severe for the poor class and the slaves . Hammurabi 's code declares the existence of inequality in society . The laws were not same for all .
