The 1990s brought very important transformations in the agricultural economy of East-Central Europe. The transformations of agriculture had very different character in individual countries, just like the levels of development and the degrees of "socialisation" were different. The main aim of the present paper is to indicate the place of agriculture of the countries of Central Europe in the agricultural economy of the European Union, and to define the directions and effects of the ownership changes, which took place in the farming sector in Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria.
