The stomach is roughly J-shaped and can be divided into the cardiac orifice, fundus, body, pyloric antrum and pylorus. There is a well- marked anatomical pyloric sphincter and a functionally competent, but not anatomically defined sphincter mechanism at the cardiac orifice.
