When copper articles are left exposed to air, they react with oxygen, water and carbon dioxide to form copper carbonate. The compound formed is basic copper carbonate normally referred to as malachite( Cu2(OH)2CO3). This compound is the green pigment in the eroded copper articles known as patina verdigris.

Hope this is helpful.
