AC current is used within household appliances.
Two reasons:
1) AC current can be easily transformed into DC current. And when you transform into DC current, you can give again DC the desired level. Then, and we can set this within number one reason, motors need AC current to be activated. And many household appliances uses motors.
The right answers is that AC current produces a variable magnetic flow within a motor coil that is used by the motor to produce the movement. These are called the asynchronous ous motors that are long used within household appliances.

2) The AC Current it´s better to transmit through long distances. If the electric power is produced 500km away from where it´s going to be consumed, the technique to "keep the power through the distance" is to high the voltage of the lines, so this gives more strength to cross the distance. Then, when the current arrives through the lines, the voltage is dropped again and then distributed to the different consumers in the appropriate values.
This cannot be done with DC Current.
