What type of drugs are used to try and prevent rejection what is the disadvantage of using these drugs?

A combination of the following medications will be used to prevent rejection of the kidney and/or pancreas transplant. You will be on prednisone, an anti-proliferative agent (mycophenolate) and a calcineurin inhibitor (cyclosporineor tacrolimus).

After a transplant procedure patient is given some anti-rejection medications, these medications are Immunosuppressants.

Immunosuppressants are given to suppress the immune response. Combination of different drugs is given to minimize the side effects.

Immunosuppressants can causes side effects over time, here are listed few of them:

- Weight gain  

- High cholesterol levels

- Osteoporosis  

- High blood sugar
