When parallel rays of light pass through a convex lens, the refracted rays converge at the focal point. ... A concave lens is a diverging lens. When parallel rays of light pass through a concave lens the refracted rays diverge so that they appear to come from one point called the principal focus.

When a beam of parallel rays of light falls on a convex lens then all the rays converge at a point hence claiming themselves as converging lens but where as when a beam of parallel rays of light falls on a concave lens then all the rays diverge in different directions hence came to be known as the diverging lens
