When metals reacts with oxygen they form basic oxides. For Eg:  Magnesium (in ribbons) are burnt in air to form MgO which is basic.

When non-metals reacts with oxygen they form acidic oxides. For Eg:  Non-metal oxides such as sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide are responsible for acid rain.
