Retina is the layer in our eye which captures the light and generates the electrical signals which travel to the brain via optic nerve. The retina contains receptors which are called the rods and cones. If light rays above a certain threshold falls on the photo-receptors a sensation of vision is produced.

A source of light sends light to our eye directly and we see that. It does not need any further explanation. Question is how do we see the objects which are not self luminant. To see such objects we need a source of light. Light from a light source is reflected from the objects and make them visible.

Whenever the photo-receptors are stimulated we have a sensation of vision. It does not matter whether the light is direct or reflected.
