Alluvial Soil

Alluvial soil is found in the deltas formed by the rivers Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri in the Eastern Coast.

Some features of this soil:

- This soil is mostly fertile as it contains some important minerals such as potash, phosphoric acid and lime in adequate amounts.

- As this soil is formed as a result of river actions, the main constituent materials of this soil are sand, clay and silt.

- The crops grown in alluvial soil include cereal crops such as wheat and paddy and pulse crops.

- On the basis of the age of the soil, alluvial soil is of two types - bangar (old alluvial soil & not much fertile) and khadar (new alluvial soil & fertile)

- Alluvial soil present in dry and arid regions may be highly alkaline. Direct farming activities cannot be done on such areas without prior treatment of the soil and irrigation.

Colour of the soil - Usually red and yellow

Texture - Depends upon on the composition of materials present

Places found - Eastern coastal plains, Northern plains
