SIC is a covalent solid.
- Solids are classified into four classes namely metallic, ionic, covalent, and molecular solids.
- Covalent solids are covalently bonded and form a network due to which they have a high melting point. Also, they do not conduct electricity and are hard substances. But graphite is only conducting covalent compounds due to its structure which allows electron movement and provides conductivity.
- Examples of covalent solids are SIC, graphite, quartz, etc.
- Metallic solids have metallic bonding and they can have low to high melting and boiling points and can be soft and hard. For example, mercury is liquid but iron is solid.
- Ionic solids can dissociate into ions in the solution or a molten state. they are brittle and have high melting point substances. for example - NaCl, MgO, etc.
- Molecular solids have low melting points because they have weak forces of attraction such as dipole-dipole interaction, hydrogen bonding, dispersion forces, etc.
