What type of star creates a supernova when it dies?

The star must be an old star surviving for trillions of years. In case of a normal star it dies after creating itself a supernova and with it's process it engulfs few objects(planets, stars debrises ,etc.) . The last step before it's supernova is known as "Red Giant".
