This is a hard question to answer without specific information. Courts operate differently depending on what country or state you might be in, so it's impossible to give a definite answer.

What I can say, generally, is that most courts referred to as a "high court" are going to be courts of appellate jurisdiction -- at least for the most part. For instance, the highest court in Illinois is the Illinois Supreme Court. Almost all of that court's docket consists of appeals from lower court rulings (usually the Illinois Appellate Court, but sometimes from trial-level courts). But the Illinois Supreme Court also has original jurisdiction over certain matters, such as petitions for writs of mandamus.

Another example is the United States Supreme Court. Its jurisdiction is also primarily appellate, but it does have original jurisdiction over certain kinds of lawsuits, such as those between two states.
