Makum coalfield in Sibsagar district is the most developed field. Assam coals contain very low ash and high coking qualities but the sulphur content is high, as a result of which this coal is not suitable for metallurgical purposes.

Tertiary coals

Tertiary coal fields share only 1% of coal production of India. Such fields occur in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Nagaland and also in small quantities in Jammu & Kashmir.

Assam Coal:

High amount of sulpher presence in the coal. Almost all the coals are tertiary coals. Or they are mostly lignite coals
