The carpometacarpal joints are synovial joints between the distalcarpal bones and the metacarpals, and the intermetacarpal joints are betweenthe metacarpals. The carpometacarpal joint of the thumb is a saddle-shapedjoint between the trapezium and the base of the first metacarpal.
