Real images can be obtained on a screen but virtual images can not be obtained on a screen. Virtual images are formed by an apparent intersection of light rays whereas real images are formed due to actual intersection of light rays. For ex a plane mirror produces virtual image whereas a concave mirror produces real image when object is too close to it(between focus and pole). This can help you tell whether an image is real or virtual.
