When India was trying to bring in social reforms like the abolition of sati and child marriage, Ambedkar's main focus was to bring in social and economic reforms for the backward classes.
Ambedkar began by questioning the class code in Hindu society and started debates on the class bias of the Hindu scriptures. He fought for equal rights of the dalits vis-a-vis the upper castes. Before his death, he along with his wife and around three lac followers embraced Buddhism as Hinduism was not doing away with the caste system.
Ambedkar strongly felt unless India was able to breakdown its caste barriers its progress would be impeded.
