As more organizations move to global markets and extend their operations worldwide they face the challenge of managing a highly diverse workforce. In this study of a Fortune 30 Multinational corporation (MNC), we examined both how cultural diversity manifests in differences in perceptions of managerial roles and how the CEO of the MNC crafts an organizational identity and values that appeal to multiple constituents from different cultures. We surveyed 4530 multiple stakeholders from both inside and outside the corporation’ who viewed the role of 384 mid-level managers, as well as the managers self-evaluations (n=367) of their roles. A factor analysis of these ratings indicated that raters distinguished between local roles, task and people focused leadership, and global roles, associated with strategic planning and managing change/innovation.
