The Founding fathers wrote the preamble to lay down a foundation for explaining what the Constitution was for. You might even say it was written as an introductory paragraph to the Constitution, or if you read novels, a prolog. Unfortunately, people with a liberal mindset, who cannot believe that the constitution is a set in stone documents but instead believe that it is an evolving document, have spread the concept that it is actually not part of the Constitution itself.

It explains the thinking, the direction, the motivation, for how the government was going to be structured as well as explanation for the Bill of Rights.
