In this latter sense, 'A Marriage' is not just simply an elegy for Elsi; instead, it is a poem that also mourns the shared experiences of the poet and his wife – their shared interest in birds. In this sense, it is an elegy for shared life, for a relationship.

Explanation:
The poem presents a negative picture of the constitution of marriage. We are introduced to aunt Jennifer, a docile, submissive, weak and overburdened lady, who longs for freedom. However, her role and duties as a wife have deprived her of the joy of being free. She has a dominating husband and a loveless marriage. And the saddest part is that she would not be free even after her death as the wedding band which is symbolic of her marriage, would still feel heavy on her finger and would not set her free even to rest in peace.
