Dear Student,

Oxygen doesnt take part in this reaction. Correct question should ask for volume of ethane.

◆ Answer - (2)

Volume of ethane = 224 L

◆ Explaination -

Monohalogenation of ethane by Wurtz reaction is given by -

2C2H6 + 2Br2 + 2Na --> C4H10 + 2HBr + 2NaBr

From the reaction, we can say that 2 mol ethane is required to prepare 1 mol n-butane. Thus amount of ethane required to prepare 5 mol n-butane is 5×2 = 10 mol.

Volume of 10 mol ethane is -

Volume = 10 × 22.4

Volume = 224 L

Therefore, 224 L ethane is required at STP.

Thanks for the question. Hope that was helpful...
