Pallavas were one of the 3 major dynasties of ancient Tamil Nadu, others being the Cholas and Pandyas. Historically they were believed to be feudatories of the Satavahanas, and gained prominence after their demise. They ruled close to 6 centuries, from 275CE- 679CE, and were noted for their constant conflicts with Cholas, Pandyas and the Chalukyas of Badami for supremacy. At their peak their empire covered a major part of the South.
Their capital initially was at Kanchi which they captured from the Cholas, during the reign of Kumaravishnu I. It first began to expand under Simhavishnu, who overthrew the Kalabharas and conquered all the way up to the Kaveri delta. He also dispatched naval expeditions all the way to Sri Lanka and Malaya. Leading the revival of the Pallava dynasty, the beginning of his reign is known as the Greater Pallava era, and it would be marked by constant conflicts with the Chalukyas for supremacy down South.
His son Mahendra Varman I took the empire to greater heights. He himself was an author wrote the play Mattavilasa Prahansa, and was a great patron of arts and architecture. The famous rock cut temples of Mahabalipuram, were built during his time.
