The purpose of guilds in the Middle Ages' medieval times was initially based on guild members' safety, but customers also benefited from guilds being introduced. Therefore, the aim of the guilds was two fold: to protect employees - the guild members.  

They developed a trade monopoly in their locality or within a specific industry or trade branch ; they set and retained norms for products quality and the integrity of trade procedures in that sector ; they worked to keep stable prices for their products and commodities.
