answer1)The survival of Union Army of the Cumberland was at stake. On the second day of battle September 20, 1863, a gap was left in the Union Lines. Confederate General James Longstreet’s attack exploited this error by Union forces and a large part of the Army of the Cumberland was driven from the field. The Union forces were saved from total collapse by the stand of George Thomas at Snodgrass Hill. For his conduct at the battle George Thomas was nicknamed “The Rock of Chickamaugua>”
