The Bastille was a fortress in Paris, built in 1370, formally known as the Bastille Saint-Antoine. It played an important role in the internal conflicts of France and for most of its history used as a state prison by the kings of France. It was destroyed on July 14th, 1789 at the start of the French Revolution.
The Bastille was hated by all in France because:
(a) It stood for the despotic power of the king - Despotic power meant that people in France had little to no power and were in constant fear of the government
(b) They tortured inmates which showed the cruelty of the French kings
(c) Often the people sent there were innocent causing resentment toward the French government from the people
