Ustad Bismillah Khan (21 March 1916 – 21 August 2006) (conceived as Qamaruddin Khan), frequently alluded to by the honorific title Ustad, was an Indian performer credited with advancing the shehnai, a subcontinental twist instrument of the oboe class. While the shehnai had long held significance as a people instrument played inschooled intraditional ceremonies , Khan is credited with raising its status and conveying it to the show stage.

He was granted India's most elevated regular citizen respect, the Bharat Ratna, in 2001, turning into the third traditional performer after M. S. Subbulakshmi and Ravi Shankar to be given this distinction
