Rainwater harvesting is considered a good option against the multipurpose projects, both economically and socially. The advantages accruing from rainwater harvesting as opposed to multipurpose projects are:

Not make displacement of the local population
Not curb means of livelihood of the local population
No environmental degradation
No submergence of trees
No detouring of river courses and effects, it has on the aquatic life
No triggering of floods due to sedimentation
No augmentation in the loss caused due to floods
No encouragement to earthquakes
Lesser water borne diseases
Lesser wastage of water
Lesser land degradation and pollution
Economically much cheaper option than multipurpose dams
Takes less time to instal
