the crime committed by the mariner was that he killed the albatross without any reason. maybe in a fit of anger he shot the albatross with his bow and arrow.

the crime was that he killed the albatross out of no reason ,(in the first part).it was considered as the christian soul in the rime of ancient mariner. It seemed as a saviour to the mariners. After the arrival of albatross the iceberg started to crack and made way for the ship.
