- Brandis wanted people to receive sufficient training in scientific conservation and a good framework for managing forests. The Indian Forest Service was established by Dietrich Brandis in 1864. Later, in 1865, he also established the Indian Forest Act.
- Brandis began his 20-year tenure as India's Inspector General of Forests in 1864. He helped create institutes for training and research as well as new forest regulations. He established the Imperial Forest School in Dehradun.
