The general estate was a part of the old regime in France. This was a classification of the society which was by accident of birth. In this estate educated people like lawyers, doctors, businessmen, were also present along with the peasants, artisans, landless labour’s etc.
this was the only estates that was supposed to pay tax.
They were also called the commoners.
