Under the Treaty of Versailles, Germany was required to make monetary payments to the Allies, called reparations. The heavy reparations, combined with the devastated economic infrastructure throughout Germany and politicaltension under the Weimar Republic, led to an economic depression.

☜☆☞ My great grandfather left Germany because of the depression.
The Great Depression had a huge impact on Germany. After World War I Germany owed l lot of money to their own military personnel and survivors and reparations under the Versailles Treaty. Money became almost worthless. Figures suggest that in 1923 $1 USD was equal to $4.2 TRILLION German Marks! In 1924 the United States loaned Germany money. This helped Germany's economy improve. Until Wall Street crashed in October of 1929.
The United States could no longer fund Germany with loans and asked for repayment of their current loans. It is estimated almost 2 million Germans were unemployed in the end of 1929.Unemployment rates rose to nearly 40%, almost 6 million unemployed in early 1933. With the rise in unemployment came homelessness, starvation and illness.
