There was no political entity called India before 1947. There were a large number of city/states to start with - mythology lists 56 in numbers . At various times, different Kings and Emperors like Chandragupta Maurya, Ashoka, the Guptas, Harsha Vardhana and Mughals ruled over large swathes of today's India but never the whole of it. Even under the British rule, there were a number of princely states, including very large ones like Hyderabad, Kashmir, Mysore and Travancore. The credit of forming today's India goes to Sardar Vallabhai Patel, who integrated the erstwhile princely states into India. Goa and Sikkim became part of India later.

There was cultural commonality between different parts but India as a nation did not exist before 1947.
