What was ironical about the boat journey? What light does it throw on the characters of the three friends?

Hope this helps!! The three men went on a boat trip to relax themselves as they felt they were overworked. However, ironically, during the entire journey, they faced a lot of difficulties, which left them tired and agitated. Though they enjoyed the trip to an extent, the entire journey doesn't seem to be so relaxing and rejuvenating. Their return journey is also not that enjoyable with it drizzling continuously. Maybe they would have been better off on the land.
