The Khilafat movement (1919–1924), initiated by Muhammad Ali and Shaukat Ali, was a mass movement against the reduction of the temporal powers of Caliph (the teligious head of the Islamic world) after the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in Turkey during the First World War.
Gandhiji supported this movement as he saw this as an oppurtunity to bring the Hindus and the Muslims under the united shade of mass struggle to fight against the political evils conducted by the British.
