James Princep in India was an administrator in the mint of the British East India Company. The main contribution of James Princep to the development of Indian epigraphy can be seen in terms that he was the first person who deciphered the Brahmi and Kharosthi scripts. The development of Indian epigraphy can be observed in the fact that after the decipherment of these two scripts all the inscriptions of Ashoka written in these scripts could be read and interpreted. It is the legacy of James Princep that we are now able to read about the political, economic and social condition under the rule of Ashoka Maurya through his inscriptions and pillars.
