Jim was just stupefied to see Della’s short hair. He just kept staring at her feeling a mixture of many emotions. Jim felt disappointment, confusion, love, and pride at the same time. The reason behind this state was he had bought jeweled pair of tortoiseshell combs for Della; he had sold his precious pocket watch for it and quite ironically Della had sold her beautiful hair to buy a gold chain for Jim’s pocket watch.
